While some celebrities enjoy fame and fortune, others prefer to take the cash and then return to their normal lives, or pursue a different dream. Whether this departure from the limelight is temporary or for good, these former A-listers are now working day jobs that more closely resemble our own.

Being a famous actor or a famous athlete might seem glamorous from the perspective of us outsiders, but there’s no denying that there is a good deal of uncertainty in the industry (especially if you aren’t a household name like Brad Pitt or Meryl Streep). At least, with a proper nine-to-five, be it at McDonald’s or something more lucrative, there is a surefire paycheck coming your way bi-weekly.

While the lifestyle switch might be a touch less luxurious, with far fewer perks, a big benefit of working a normal job is saying farewell to the high-stress, time-consuming pressure of jobs in the public eye in favor of more privacy. From former sports stars to singers and everything in between, these guys have switched career paths and don’t regret a single thing.

1. Michael Schoeffling

Among the many actors that represent the spirit of the 1980s, Michael Schoeffling manages to stand out from the rest. The star of such hits as Vision Quest, Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken and – crucially – Sixteen Candles will forever be a part of American pop culture.

2. Danica McKellar

3. Cameron Diaz

Diaz has retired from acting (for now) to focus on raising a family. She is married to rocker Benji Madden, and the two have one child together. Diaz also is a philanthropist. She works for the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America organization, which advocates for veterans and military families.

4. Hayden Christiansen

Hayden Christiansen became an actor after he accompanied his older sister to an acting agency’s interviews and got signed on to do commercials. After that, he appeared, most famously, in the Star Wars movies, where he played the role of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.

Christiansen decided that he wanted to step back from acting, and he purchased a farm in 2007. The farm is located in Ontario, Canada, and he renovated the property himself in 2008 and also became self-educated on livestock, agricultural machinery, and crops. He released his own line of farmer’s clothing, working alongside the brand RW&Co.

5. Steven Seagal

Steven Seagal is a former musician, actor, and martial artist who holds citizenship in America, Russia, and Serbia. Seagal has retired (mostly) from acting. Seagal is part of the Russian weapons company, ORSIS, and he and is a spokesperson for the business, representing them in promotional ventures. He announced that he was going to team up with ORSIS to release a long-range rifle that would bear his name.

The group headlined The 20 Tour, which was a tour honoring the twentieth anniversary since the band’s founding and the release of “Swear It Again,” which was their first hit single. Westlife also dropped a new single in 2019, “Hello My Love,” which premiered for the first time on The Graham Norton Show.

7. Drake Bell

Drake Bell is a former Nickelodeon star who was the lead in the show Drake and Josh, opposite Josh Peck. He began acting when he was just five years old, and he had a televised appearance on the hit sitcom Home Improvement. 8. Shaquille O’Neal

Kristin Davis is an actress who has appeared, most famously, on the show Sex and the City and in the Sex and the City movies. Now, Day-Lewis is the honorary president of a charity called the Poetry Archive. The Poetry Archive is a charity registered in the UK. It is a free site containing a huge collection (and still growing) of English poets reading their work aloud. Day-Lewis has donated his father’s poetry collection to the charity.

14. Terrence Howard

17. Adam Lamberg

Adam Lamberg’s time as a college student and writer is soon coming to an end, as Disney Plus announced that it would be reinstating him in his role of Gordo in the new Lizzie McGuire series. Lamberg first became famous for his role as Lizzie’s best friend/crush in the 2001-2004 Disney Channel show.

Gene Hackman retired from acting after a long career, though he is still a novelist, having not announced his retirement from that. After that, he lent his voice as a narrator to a 2016 documentary called The Unknown Flag Raiser of Iwo Jima. He then narrated a 2017 TV documentary called We, the Marines.

He officially retired in 2017. Now, Hackman is a novelist. He has written three historical fiction books, a Western, and a police thriller. His thriller, Pursuit, was released in 2013 and is his most recent book. It has a 4/5-star rating on Amazon. His first novel, Wake of the Perdido Star, was released in 1999.

21. Sarah Michelle Gellar

The beloved series was a flagship show on NBC (owned by Comcast). Estrada was on the show from 1977 until 1983. After that, he started work on Spanish telenovelas, reality series, infomercials, and voice-acting on Adult Swim. It wasn’t until 2009 that he became a deputy sheriff in Virginia. In 2016, he moved with his wife and became a reserve police officer in Idaho. Like his character on CHiPs, he is a motorcycle officer.

26. Nikki Blonsky

Though Prinze Jr. isn’t acting anymore (he and his wife are busy running a company, Foodstirs, together), he does occasionally lend his voice to animated shows. He voiced the character of Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars Rebels, a Disney XD series. Jarrus’ disembodied voice also appeared in The Rise of Skywalker.

29. Charlie Korsmo

He has worked for the EPA and in politics. Currently, he is a law professor at Case Western Reserve, teaching corporations and corporate finance law.

In 2011, he was nominated by the President to be a member of the Barry Goldwater Scholarship & Excellence in Education Foundation. Though his time is mostly taken up by academic pursuits, he has had a 2019 film role. He appeared in the bit role of Herr Director in the movie Chained for Life, a drama.

30. Geena Davis

Fans of Grey’s Anatomy and The Exorcist (the TV version) have noticed that she hasn’t completely retired from acting, however. She reprised her role as Dr. Nicole Herman during the 2018 season of Grey’s.
