Who is Vhagar? Meet the largest fire-breathing dragon in 'House of the Dragon' universe
Out of all the dragons, Vhagar was undoubtedly the most intimidating one and was ridden by several kings and queens

‘Game of Thrones’ was undoubtedly one of the biggest shows on the planet during its run and there were a lot of factors why the show garnered so much success over the years. From epic action sequences and riveting storyline to engaging characters and fire-breathing dragons, the world created by David Benioff and DB Weiss, along with George RR Martin, was a force to be reckoned with. But there’s no doubt that the arrival of Dragons made everything better. The only remaining member of House Targaryen (at the time), Daenerys Targaryen, also known as Mother of Dragons had three dragons who helped them in conquering Westeros.
However, the upcoming HBO series ‘House of the Dragon’ will feature 17 dragons and most of them will have their own Dragon riders. Whenever we mention Dragon, everyone starts asking who is the biggest of them all. If you are one of those, don’t worry, we have you covered. The latest teaser trailer for ‘House of the Dragon’ saw a fire-breathing dragon wreaking havoc and showing his might. So, who is that beast? And who does it belong to? Let’s take a look.

Who is Vhagar? Meet the biggest Dragon in HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon' series
Let’s make one thing clear, Vhagar is “not” the biggest Dragon in the ‘Game of Thrones’ universe. That monumental feat belongs to Balerion, who is also considered to be the Greatest Dragon to have ever lived. But Vhagar is the biggest Dragon in the HBO adaptation because Balerion is dead and it has been confirmed by some of the shots in the recent trailer. So, that makes Vhagar the biggest “living” Dragon in the ‘HOTD’ universe
She hatched from a Dragon Egg on Dragonstone during the Century of Blood and was named after a god of the Valyrian Freehold. The first-ever person to ride the beast was Queen Visenya, who proved herself to be a Dragon rider sometime before she married Aegon. Visenya rode Vhagar for a long time and used him to set ablaze the ships of the Arryn fleet that captured one-third of Targaryen’s ships. When King Aegon I died in 37 AC, Vhagar supplied the flames to light the fire of his funeral pyre.
Visenya died on Dragonstone in 44 AC, leaving Vhagar without a rider. Vhagar remained unridden for twenty-nine years after Visenya's death and it was Prince Baelon the Brave who rode the dragon in 73 AC. When Balerion died in 94 AC, Vhagar became the last of the three Targaryen dragons who had fought in the Conquest. He became riderless again when Prince Baelon died in 101 AC. By 129 AC, Vhagar was nearly as big as Balerion and became the largest living dragon of her time.
During the ‘Dance of the Dragons’, Aemond Targaryen started riding the dragon and developed an amazing bond with her. Aemond would continue to fly Vhagar in battle during the civil war between King Aegon II and Queen Rhaenyra. She was the only dragon who left the battle reasonably unharmed. Aemond and Vhagar continued to wreak havoc on enemies and conquer everything. Vhagar was one hundred and eighty-one years old when she died.
It'll be interesting to see Vhagar taking a flight and breathing fire on everyone in his sight.
'House of the Dragon' will be premiering exclusively on Sunday, August 21, on HBO and HBO Max at 9 pm EST.
