Geography of Ethiopia
The topographic map shows major features of Ethiopia's landscape.
A large part of the tropical country at the Horn of Africa is dominated by mountains and plateaus, which create a quite varied landscape.
In the center of the nation is the northern portion of the Great Rift Valley, which separates the country's central highlands. From southwest to northeast, the valley stretches for more than 1,000 km through the country and widens in the northwest into the plains of the Afar Triangle.
Mountains
To the north of the Rift valley is the rugged mass of the Ethiopian Highlands or Western Highlands; to the southeast are the Somali Highlands or Eastern Highlands with the Bale Mountains and the Ahmar Mountains. Tullu Dimtu, at 4,377 m, is the highest peak of the Bale range. The highest mountain in Ethiopia is Ras Dashen (4,550 m), a peak in the Semien Mountains in the northern part of the country.
Lakes
A series of lakes adorn the Rift Valley. Some of them are freshwater lakes, but most of the Rift Valley lakes do not have an outlet and are alkaline "soda lakes." The largest are Lake Abaya, Lake Chamo, Lake Zway, and Lake Shala.
Lake Tana is the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile River; it lies in the Ethiopian Highlands in the north of the country.
Lake Abbe, on the border between Ethiopia and Djibouti in the Afar Depression, is an endorheic lake fed by the Awash River.
Rivers
The Atbarah River, also known as the Black Nile, is a tributary of the Nile. The Abbay River, also known as the Blue Nile, originates at Lake Tana. Ethiopia is building the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (abbreviation: GERD) on the Blue Nile near the border to Sudan. The Awash River has its source in the Ethiopian Plateau and ends in the endorheic Lake Abbe on the Ethiopia-Djibouti border in the Afar Triangle.
