The city was founded in the beginning of the 19th century and is since 1839 the capital of Alagoas state. Today the city has a population of nearly one million people.
The largest city in Alagoas state lies in a tropical zone and has therefore a tropical climate, with the highest temperatures in December and January (around 30°+ C. Maceió has a vibrant beach tourist industry with all the appropriate facilities.
One of its main industries is the production of ethanol and sugar from sugarcane grown in the region.
