Czech Country Profile (Czech) – Czech or Czech is a country located in the Central part of the European continent (Central Europe). The country which is astronomically located between 48°-51°N and 12°-19°E is bordered by Germany in the west and north, Czech Republic also borders Poland in the north and Slovakia in the southeast. While to the south, the Czech Republic borders Austria. Czech Republic, which is a landlocked country, is a new country formed after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.
After the First World War, Czechoslovakia and Slovakia, which were previously ruled by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, merged into a single country called Czechoslovakia (Czechoslovakia) in 1918. During World War II, Nazi Germany occupied what is now the Czech Republic while Slovakia became an independent country allied with Germany. After World War II, Czechoslovakia was reunited but part of its territory, namely the territory of Ruthenia, fell into the hands of the Soviet Union. In 1968, an invasion by Warsaw forces ended efforts by the country's leaders to liberalize communist rule and create "socialism with a human face".
The “Velvet Revolution” then freed Czechoslovakia from the influence of the communist party in 1989. Finally, on January 1, 1993, Czechoslovakia dissolved and split into two countries, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. January 1, 1993 is celebrated as the Czech Republic's independence day.
The system of government adopted by the Czech Republic is a parliamentary republic system of government, which is a system of government in which the head of state is the president while the head of government is the prime minister who is appointed by the president. The President of the Czech Republic is elected by Parliament for a 5-year term and can only serve a maximum of 2 consecutive terms. The President of the Czech Republic also has the right of veto in legislation, the right of immunity and the right to dissolve parliament in certain circumstances.
The area of the Czech Republic is 78,867 km2 with a population of 10,674,723 people (2017). The majority of the population of the Czech Republic are ethnic Czechs (64.3%), Moravians (5%) and Slovaks (1.4%). Only 10.4% of the population of the Czech Republic are Roman Catholic and 1.1% are Protestant Christians, the rest are non-religious or of unknown religion. The official language of the Czech Republic is Czech.
The Czech Republic is one of the countries with the highest GDP growth and lowest unemployment rate in the European Union. Since coming to power in 2014, the new Czech Republic government has carried out several reforms to reduce corruption, attract investment and improve the social welfare of its people so as to increase government revenues and improve the quality of life of the people of the Czech Republic.
In 2017, Czech GDP growth was 4.3% with an unemployment rate of around 2.8%. The Gross Domestic Product of this country's GDP is US$375.7 billion with a per capita income of US$35,500. The industries that form the backbone of the Czech Republic's economy are the Automotive Industry, Metallurgy, Machinery and Equipment, glass and weapons industries.
In foreign relations, the Czech Republic joined the United Nations on January 19, 1993, then joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004. The Czech Republic is also a member country of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the Euro-Atlantic Partnership. Council (EAPC), Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
