Iran is an Islamic State located in the Middle East Region of the Asian continent (Southwest Asia). Iran, which is astronomically located between 24°- 40° N and 44°- 64° East, is bordered by Azerbaijan and Armenia in the northwest, Iran is bordered in the east by Pakistan and Afghanistan. Iran also borders Turkmenistan to the Northeast while Turkey and Iraq to the west. To the north of Iran is the Caspian Sea, to the south is the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
Historically, Iran was known as Persia until in 1959 it was replaced by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi which means "Land of the Aryans". Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi was the King who ruled Iran from September 16, 1941 until his overthrow in the Iranian revolution on February 11, 1979. The Islamic Republic of Iran was officially formed on April 1, 1979, a date that was later commemorated as Republic Day of Iran.
Iran has an area of 1,648,195 km2 with a population of 82,021,564 people. Almost all of Iran's population embraces Islam, which is as much as 99.4%. The official language of Iran is Persian. The main ethnic Iranians are Persians, Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Lurs, Balochs, Turkmen and Turkic tribes.
The system of government adopted by Iran is the Theocratic Republic, which is a system of government whose head of state is a Supreme Leader who has the highest political and religious authority in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Supreme Leader of Iran has higher and stronger powers than the President of Iran. This Supreme Leader can appoint the Head of Military, Civil Government and Judiciary. The current Supreme Leader of Iran is Ali Hoseini-KHAMENEI since June 4, 1989. Iran also has the post of President, but the President of Iran is the head of government who is elected through general elections with a term of 4 years. Presidential candidates must obtain approval from Iran's Guardian Council before the General Elections are held.
Iran is one of the largest producers and exporters of petroleum in the world. Based on data quoted from the CIA World Factbook, Iran produces as much as 4 million bbl of oil per day. Iran's Gross Domestic Product is US$1.549 trillion with a Per capita Income of US$19,300,-. Industries that are the backbone of Iran's economy include petroleum, petrochemical products, gas, textiles, cement, construction materials, fertilizers and food processing.
In foreign relations, Iran is a member state of the United Nations and institutions under the United Nations. Iran is also a member of the Organization for Economic Cooperation (ECO), Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
