Madagascar is an island country located off the coast of southern Africa, the Indian Ocean. The main island, Madagascar Island, is the fourth largest island in the world. In addition to this largest island, the country which is fully called the Republic of Madagascar also has several smaller islands around its main island, namely Juan de Nova Island, Europa Island, Glorioso Islands, Tromelin Island, and Bassas da India. The capital of Madagascar is Antananarivo.
Madagascar, which is astronomically located between 12° South Latitude – 26° South Latitude, and 43° East Longitude – 51° East Longitude is surrounded by sea and has no land borders with any country. The land closest to Madagascar is the State of Mozambique (the mainland of the African continent) which is separated by the strait of Madagascar to the west. Other sea borders are Reunion (France) and Mauritius to the east and the Comoros and Mayotte (France) to the northwest. Even though it is located very close to the African continent, geologically, demographically and biologically it is different from mainland Africa.
The area of Madagascar is 587,041 km2 with a population of 25,054,161 people based on estimates for July 2017. The majority of Madagascar's population adheres to Christianity, Islam and the beliefs of the original population. The ethnic groups that inhabit Madagascar include Malayo-Indonesians (Merina and Betsileo), Cotiers (a mixture of Africa, Malayo-Indonesia and Arabs – Betsimisaraka, Tsimihety, Antaisaka, Sakalava). Madagascar has two official languages, French and Malagasy.
The government system adopted by Madagascar is a semi-presidential republican system of government, which is a system of government in which the head of state is the president but the head of government is the prime minister. The President of Madagascar is directly elected by the people for a term of 5 years and can be re-elected (maximum 2 terms) while the Prime Minister is proposed by the National Assembly and appointed by the President.
In the economic field, Madagascar is a country that relies on agriculture, fisheries and forestry as the backbone of its economy. Around 80% of the population works in these sectors and is also the largest contributor (approximately 23.7%) of Madagascar's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Madagascar's Gross Domestic Product or GDP is US$39.81 billion while its Per capita Income is US$1,600,-. Agricultural commodities that are important to Madagascar's economy include coffee, vanilla, sugar cane, cocoa, bananas, rice, cloves, cassava and beans. In addition to the agricultural sector, industries that are important to Madagascar's economy include meat processing, seafood, soap, beer, leather, sugar, textiles, paper, oil, automobile assembly and tourism.
In foreign relations, Madagascar is a member state of the United Nations and also a member of the institutions under the United Nations.
