Country Profile Tanzania – Tanzania is a country located on the African continent, precisely in the East African continent. This tropical country is bordered by Kenya and Uganda to the north, bordering Rwanda, Burundi and Zaire to the west. While to the south, Tanzania is bordered by Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. To the east of Tanzania is the Indian Ocean. The capitals of Tanzania are Dodoma (Legislative Capital) and Dar es Salaam (Administrative Capital).
The country of Tanzania that we know today was originally two newly independent countries from the United Kingdom (UK), namely the country of Tanganyika and the country of Zanzibar. Tanganyika, which became independent on December 9, 1961 and Zanzibar on December 10, 1963, was later merged into a new country called the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar on April 26, 1964. Six months later, the name of the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar was changed to the United Republic of Tanzania or often referred to simply as Tanzania.
The area of Tanzania is 947,300 km2 with a population of 53,950,935 people. The majority of Tanzania's population is mainland African ethnicity, most of which are Christians 61.4% and Islam 35.2%. Like other African countries, Tanzania is also a country with high population growth. Tanzania's population growth is 2.75% making it the 11th highest population growth country in the world. The official languages are Kiswahili/Swahili and English.
The government system adopted by Tanzania is a presidential republic government system in which the head of state and head of government is the president who is assisted by a vice president. The President and Vice President of Tanzania are elected by the people through Presidential Elections for a term of 5 years. The Tanzanian Legislative Council or Parliament consists of 393 seats for 5-year terms.
In the field of Economy, Tanzania has enjoyed a fairly high economic growth from 2009 to 2017, which is an average of around 6% – 7%. The Agriculture sector is the backbone of the economy which accounts for about a quarter of Tanzania's GDP and employs about 65% of the workforce. Tanzania's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is US$162.2 billion with a Per capita Income of US$3,200,-.
The new government elected in 2015 has developed an ambitious development agenda and is focused on creating a better business environment through infrastructure improvements, education advancement and access to finance. Agricultural commodities that are important to the Tanzanian economy include coffee, sisal, tea, cotton, pyrethrum (an insecticide made from chrysanthemums), cashews, tobacco, cloves, corn, wheat, cassava (cassava, tapioca), bananas, fruit -fruits, vegetables as well as livestock such as sheep and goats.
In foreign relations, Tanzania is a member state of the United Nations as well as other international institutions under the United Nations. Tanzania is also a member country of the East African Community, the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States, the African Union and the Commonwealth of Nations.
